When casework is processed
We process applications and bills as quickly as we can – the vast majority within our published targets.
To help you know when to contact us with queries, the table below shows the oldest date of receipt of bills currently being worked on in each category. We aim to update this each week.
Any work received earlier than the date shown will already have been processed. Work received later than the date shown may not have been dealt with.
When we pay you
Once processing is complete and your bill is ready for payment, it takes up to 8 working days for the money to reach your account if you are paid by BACS.
Please wait until this time has elapsed before contacting our customer services team with an enquiry as this will help us process all claims more quickly.
Sometimes there are variations in processing times between our teams and we may be able to process your work quicker than the oldest date shown.

How we notify you
We notify you as soon as we have processed your application or bill. It normally takes 3 working days for you to receive this. We will tell you if:
- payment by cheque is enclosed or is about to be paid by BACS
- we need further information from you
- we need further information from HMCS or CPS about your claim – for example the number of pages of prosecution evidence.
Payment will be delayed until we receive all the further information we need.
Where bills are processed
It’s important to send your bill to the right office as processing and payment may be delayed if you don’t. We have 2 specialist crime processing teams in Nottingham and Liverpool, handling a large number of transactions each week.
To find the right team, use the interactive guide ‘where work is processed’ under Documents on the right of this page.
